what exactly do private equity employees do?

i’m not so much asking about what private equity inself is…but a person who says “I do private equity” really does (assuming he’s an employee of a firm, not self-employeed or owner of company).
do they read some charts and decide to lend money? decide to invest money? or is it like a little complicated forex game…? or what the hell do they do. and why earn so much!?
It is all of the above and a little more. When we talk about being in “Private Equity” we mean that we look at companies that are not publicly traded on a stock exchange, which we could target for and on behalf of an Investor (usually our client) to invest in as part of buyouts, a buy in or a merger. The most common term is M&A or Merger and Acquisitions.
The most popular investment strategies in private equity include leveraged buyouts (LBO), joint ventures, venture capital, growth capital, distressed investments and mezzanine capital. Some a long term investments but some have a short term nature.
We therefore look at the industry and see if it is a growth industry and if not if the company has a particular edge, then we look at the company and its owners and do some due diligence to ensure that our clients actually get what they are expecting to get. To give you a brief overview this is what we do:
•Screening country, sector and size for relevant opportunity
•Qualifying companies and providing a target short list
•Assisting in the selection of targets
•Approaching targets and indicating an interest for client whilst preserving confidentiality
•Preparing due diligence report on targets
•Communication and visits with targets on behalf of Client
•Estimating value of target
•Assisting in negotiating a deal with Target
•Liaising and Contract co-ordination
•Closing the deal
